Rumour-1: “Chicken is not safe to Consume”
The suppositions are prevailing on social media platforms over the possible avian/Chicken links to the deadly Covid-19 disease. These rumours have badly affected the consumption of chicken and put the poultry industry in a difficulty.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Virus -2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causal agent of COVID-19 disease, has no relationship with the avian of chicken/avian species. The studies conducted on several animal hosts also support this claim. All poultry products are safe to consume. The personal hygiene advocated for all poultry product handlers is necessary. The Ministry of Animal Husbandry has issued a number of advisories in the recent past.
Rumour-II: “Tiranga virus or Red Tomato virus more dangerous than Coronavirus”
There is no Tiranga virus or Red Tomato virus in tomatoes. Tomato plants are naturally infected by a few common plant viruses but none of them is harmful to human being and there is no report of any human/ animal virus infecting plants including tomato. The claims of its being more dangerous than the ongoing COVID-19, a human disease are absurd. Horticulture Commissioner of India has verified this.
