Dr Nivedita Gupta

Division of Communicable Diseases, Indian Council of Medical Research, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi, India

Dr. Nivedita Gupta is a medical scientist trained in virology, epidemiology and vaccinology. She is the Head of the Division of Communicable Diseases at Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and has 18 years of work experience in viral infections and vaccines. She was instrumental in establishing the network of 157 virus research & diagnostic laboratory (VRDLs) and has developed capacity for virus detection across India. She was instrumental in augmenting COVID-19 testing capacity in India from a single laboratory in January 2020 to more than 3300 laboratories now. She was the key person to lay down the SoPs for establishing molecular virology labs, implement quality testing protocols, formulation of COVID-19 validation protocols and introduction of multiple testing platforms in India. She spearheaded the program to upscale the development and validation of indigenous molecular diagnostics for COVID-19 resulting in 50-fold cost reduction. She coordinated R&D and clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines in India including Covaxin, Covishield and Covovax. She has significantly contributed to strengthen surveillance and diagnostic capacity for viruses in India including arboviruses (dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis & Zika), Influenza, Measles Rubella, enteroviruses etc. As a team member, she has worked on deciphering the etiology and develop management guidelines for acute encephalitis syndrome in different parts of India. She is the Member Secretary of National Authority for Containment of Polioviruses. She has been extensively involved in prevention, containment and research on Nipah virus disease in India. She has 143 peer reviewed publications and 3 book chapters to her credit. She is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India

He has more than 47 year’s research experience.  He was director of National Institute of Virology, a prestigious institute of the Country for 12 years.  After retirement he joined as Director, IRSHA, a biomedical research institute of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune.
His basic interest is epidemiology and containment of infectious diseases.  Incrimination of Chandipura virus as causative agent for highly fatal Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in central India was his path-breaking discovery. He worked extensively on epidemiology of JE and Dengue viruses and investigated outbreaks of international concern like Nipah, SARS, Avian and Pandemic Influenza. Establishment of the first comprehensive BSL3 and first BSL4 laboratories was one of his several achievements.
He has published over 170 research papers in international peer reviewed journals and has written and edited several books. He travelled widely to participate in international meetings and conferences. He represented Government of India on various international forums. Dr Mishra is elected fellow of Indian National Science Academy, Delhi and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.

ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Microbial Containment Complex,
Sus Road, Pashan, Pune 411021, INDIA

Dr. D T Mourya obtained Ph.D. from University of Indore, Post-Doctoral work at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK.

He has been associated with National Institute of Virology since 1977, for research on viruses.

Formerly, Director, National Institute of Virology, Pune; currently, ICMR-Chair for Virology & Zoonosis.

He has worked in various disciplines like Biocontainment, Virology, Medical Entomology and Biotechnology.

He has made outstanding contributions in the field of emerging and newly emerging viral diseases.

Played major role in leading the nation in the battle of highly pathogenic viral infections by providing expertise to establish state-of-the-art infrastructures, (BSL3 and BSL4) with a cutting edge advantage in dealing with such catastrophes. His research elucidated the existence of certain highly pathogenic viral infections in the country and revealed their importance in public health; current example is detection of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in Gujarat state.

He is one of the global expert on biosafety/biosecurity and consultant to World Health Organization [SEARO] as biosafety expert. He has to his credit the discovery of several viruses first time from India and some novel viruses, new to science.

He is recipient of several prestigious National awards for meritorious work in the field of virology. He has authored more than 220 research paper in National & International Journals and has to his credit the transfer of several technologies of public health importance to industry. Honored as Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India [FNASc]; The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences [FNAASc]; The Indian Virological Society [FIVS].
